Hand Embellished Dupattas

They say, save the best for last..

This dupatta is my favourite because I went crazy with it in terms of size. The pallu is broader than it should be, but I enjoyed my canvas so much that I lost track of size. The mix of colour and shades of gota add entertainment to my “Aqeeq manifestation on textiles”.

My own favourite aqeeq ring is a maroon with crown of ferozi. To me, Aqeeq is one of the kindest stone. My work is a play of colour and emotion and I wondered how I could create a product that could bring the same feeling to a consumer.

The one of a kind collection is my own miracle moment. If I want to do something, I don’t just need a vision, but also the strength to take the first step towards it - which is the hardest.

As soon as I’d think of such dupattas, my

brain would say I can’t stitch so much. To keep going, I would have to hire artisans, get loads of material, work on a floor frame called the “adda”to stretch the length my cloth etc. The plan would flop because I didn’t have access to any artisans in Canada and the story would end before starting. But a while later, I would dream again…

My mind would keep asking me where to keep the floor frame without the kids jumping on it as a trampoline. Working on an adda(wooden frame with legs) would require a lot of practice before I can work at a pace I can maintain without a frame.

My heart told me that I work my fastest without a frame. One morning, I woke up to know just what had to be done!  I converted my bed into an extended work station everyday.

I happily became my own craftsman.

Once the dupattas were ready, my mind longed for a majestic shoot, that showcased the beauty of our culture during festive events. I longed to invest more on the idea to give it my best but the challenges to accomplish my plans would dampen my own spirits

To pull myself out of the dark, I’d remind myself to work with what I had. The only way ahead is baby steps and working with whatever we have. This might be very insignificant for many, but in this moment, it’s my dream come true. The agenda for now was to get this done!!

The agenda for now was to get this done!! I became my own muse, to maintain my own

focus on the dupatta rather than organizing a shoot that would enhance the product more.

I’m in competition with myself, which is why I know how I have to improve these. We are all work in progress and the day I’ve feel I’ve done everything, is the day I stop being an a creator.

Cannot thank Allah mian enough and to all those who send me gota as a gift from parts of Pakistan. You all know who you are and I appreciate you immensely for supporting my mad demands. And yes, I will always ask for more because I always want to be working on my next best piece.

Many have asked if I will mass produce them?

My answer is no ❤️. I do these myself by hand from start to finish. Takes me two months to finish a piece. Their rightful owner will find them when they must - These dupattas aren’t for everyone 😊.

Until then, I want to wrap up this collection and say a big thank you once again for all the love that I’ve received for one of a kind. Your support has energized my strength to create more.

The same design will not be repeated because I don’t remember what I make 🤪. But I promise I’ll do more of this- Inshallah.

Lots of love,

Amna Nawab
